How to Take Stunning Photos of Your Kids Using Your Phone: A Parent’s Guide
As parents, we want to preserve our little one’s moments, both big and small. From birthday celebrations to everyday moments like building blocks on the floor, there is an intimate story to be preserved. From my experience as both a Mama of four and a professional photographer serving Northern New Jersey, I’m here to report your phone is an amazing tool—and you can learn how to use it effectively!
Here’s how you can make the most of your phone’s camera settings to take stunning photos of your kids, whether they’re busy playing or striking a pose.
Use Portrait Mode for a Professional Look
Portrait Mode is one of the easiest ways to elevate your photos. This setting creates a beautifully blurred background, making your child the star of the shot!
Pro tip: Tap your child’s face on the screen to ensure it’s in focus. Look for soft, natural light to make their skin tones look natural.
When to use it: Portrait Mode works best for close-ups and single-subject shots. Think posed pictures or focusing in on a little hand!
Adjust Focus and Exposure
Your phone lets you control focus and brightness manually, and this can make a huge difference in your photos!
• Focus: Simply tap on your child’s face (or another focal point) to make sure it’s sharp.
• Exposure: After tapping to focus, slide your finger up or down on the screen to brighten or darken the image. This is especially helpful in tricky lighting situations, like when your child is in the shade or near a bright window.

Use Burst Mode for Action Shots
Kids are always on the move and capturing that perfect moment can feel impossible. This is where Burst Mode comes in!
- Simply hold down the shutter button, and your phone will take a series of photos in quick succession.
- Afterward, scroll through the series and pick the best shot—whether it’s a mid-air jump or a candid giggle.
Turn Off the Flash
Flash often creates harsh lighting and can wash out your child’s features. Instead:
- Use natural light whenever possible. Position your child near a window or take photos outdoors in soft, even light.
- If it’s too dark, adjust the exposure (as mentioned above) or turn on a nearby lamp to brighten the scene.

Experiment with Live Photos or Motion Modes
If your phone has a Live Photo feature (iPhones) or motion-photo modes, use them to add a little magic to your photos.
- These modes capture a few seconds of movement before and after you take the picture, which can be especially fun for active kids.
- You can also use them to select the perfect frame if your child blinked or moved during the shot. To select your favorite frame on an iPhone, click “Edit”, select “Live”, then scroll to select your favorite frame and save as your new “Key Photo”.
Keep Your Lens Clean
This one is simple but crucial—kids mean fingerprints everywhere, and a smudged lens can ruin even the best shot.
- Before taking photos, wipe your phone’s lens with a soft cloth to ensure your images are crisp and clear.
Get Creative with Angles and Perspectives
Change up your angles to make your photos more dynamic:
- Get on their level: Kneeling or lying down to match your child’s perspective creates more intimate, engaging photos.
- Bird’s-eye view: Stand above them for a fun, creative shot—perfect for capturing them lying on the floor or playing with toys.

Bonus Tip: Capture Candid Moments
The best photos aren’t always posed. Some of the most cherished images come from catching your child in a natural moment—laughing, exploring, or just being themselves. Let them be free, and be ready to snap away!
Final Thoughts
By using your phone’s camera settings intentionally, you can create beautiful images that capture the joy and magic of their everyday childhood.
