How to Take Stunning Photos of Your Kids Using Your Phone: A Parent’s Guide

If you’re expecting a baby (congratulations!), you might be wondering whether to book a Fresh 48 session or a more traditional newborn photography session. Both options capture your little one’s earliest days—but in very different ways.

As a Northern NJ newborn photographer, I offer both types of sessions and love helping families decide what makes the most sense for them. Here’s a simple breakdown to help you choose.

What Is a Fresh 48 Session?

Fresh 48 photos are taken within the first 24–48 hours after birth—usually in your hospital, birthing center, or home (if you’ve had a home birth). These sessions are raw, emotional, and beautiful in their simplicity. Think: wrinkly toes, hospital bracelets, first snuggles, and siblings meeting the baby for the first time.

They are not posed or styled. No props, no elaborate setups—just your real moments as they happen. I gently guide the session to highlight the natural connection between you and your baby, using soft, flattering light when possible.

What Is a Newborn Session?

A newborn session usually takes place around 1–3 weeks after baby arrives, either in your home or in a studio setting. These sessions are slower-paced, giving us time for feeds, snuggles, and diaper changes.

The goal is to create soft, timeless images that showcase the quiet bond you’re building. We can include siblings, parents, and even pets if you’d like. I also offer styling guidance and tips on what to wear to help you feel confident and relaxed.

Which One Should You Choose?

There’s no wrong answer here—it really depends on what moments matter most to you. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Fresh 48 might be for you if…
You want to freeze time in those first hours—the scrunchy faces, the brand-newness, the emotion of meeting your baby. It’s especially powerful if you value storytelling and don’t mind showing up in your hospital gown with a messy bun and a full heart.
  • A newborn session might be for you if…
You’d rather wait until you’re settled at home, have had a chance to rest a little, and want a soft, clean backdrop with styling support. These sessions give you a little more space to breathe and prepare.
  • Want both?
Some families book both! They’re totally different experiences—and together, they tell a fuller story of your baby’s beginning. I have several bundled package offerings for those looking to tell a more complete story of their family. Just reach out here to find out more!
